Newbie photographers like me always misunderstood what
megapixel are, people think that megapixel is the one who makes up the
quality of the picture taken from the camera, but all of that is just pure
misunderstanding of the real role of megapixel.
Megapixel are referred as the resolution of the camera or
in simple terms it is the size of the picture that your camera can make for
example here are some pictures that I have taken using my mobile phone cameras
Exhibit A.
Exhibit B.
*Both our exhibits are raw and not filtered or edited using
Photoshop*
Exhibit A was taken by a Nokia XpressMusic Camera with 3
Megapixels
Exhibit B was taken by a LG L5Dual Camera with 5
Megapixels
The
Exhibit A have a size of 2048x1536 and Exhibit B have 2560x1920 as you can see
both images have good qualities Exhibit A as I can remember was taken with a
low light situation because of the clouds and it was around 4-5pm in the
afternoon while Exhibit B was taken with a better light situation at around
9-10 in the morning in numbers you can already see that the 5 megapixel camera
have a higher size or resolution than the 3 megapixel camera how about in the
picture how can we see the size difference? Here is an example of that
Exhibit A.
Exhibit B.
I have placed red dots on the pictures with Photoshop CS5 using a brush
tool to create a circle with 100px on both images as you can see the dot on Exhibit A is larger than the one in Exhibit B this just shows that
megapixel does not affect the quality of the picture that you can make but only
the size of the picture you take every time you hit your shutter also
in the end the quality of the pictures that you take still depends on the power
of the lens that you are using.
